Celler de Capçanes

Capçanes is a small village within the Catalonian wine making zone Montsant - possibly more well-known for its proximity to Priorat - and is also the name of the modern cooperative, Celler de Capçanes.

In the 1990’s, a young German winemaker Jürgen Wagner was the catalyst for progressing this cooperative from being simply a grower of grapes for sale to other wineries to being a fully-fledged wine producing superstar, making everything from quaffable to exquisite single vineyard wines.

With celebrated winemaker Ana Rovira as the head winemaker, Celler de Capçanes has a international reputation for making excellent red wines with the local varieties Garnatxa Tinta & Blanc, Cariñena and Macabeo with the addition of small amounts of French varieties- a reflection of the unique culture of Catalonia.

There are close to 100 individual plot holders whose grapes contribute to the production at Celler de Capçanes. On infertile soils of limestone, slate, and clay upon steep slopes and terraces, the bush vines of over 100 years old seek deep beneath the earth to seek nutrients and water, lending unique character and concentration of flavour the wines- wines renown for power, complexity, and elegance. In Jürgen’s words:

Freshness is always our goal. We put elegance above over-extraction.

Hand-harvested from 10-25 year-old vines grown at altitudes of 150-450m in soils ranging from alluvial to granite and slate. Yields are less than 1.5kg per vine. The grape varieties are co-fermented before 6-10 days of maceration, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel.
